As we welcome warmer temperatures, the woods of the Michinoku Hydrangea Garden (みちのくあじさい園) come alive as a breathtaking dreamscape. Enjoy a nature walk along trails lined with massive blooms, tucked beneath a canopy of towering cedar trees:

・Okuhime (奥姫) Course: 1.2km
・Kurenai (くれない) Course: 900m
・Miyama (深山) Course: 650m

As one of Japan’s largest hydrangea gardens, spanning around 15 hectares, you could easily wander through the flowers for hours.
Along the way, you’ll discover a treasure trove of hydrangea with over 400 varieties and more than 40,000 plants. It’s easy to see why this garden has officially been certified as the No. 1 hydrangea garden in the country by the Japan Hydrangea Association!

The Hydrangea Pond

One of the garden’s most photogenic sights is the Hydrangea Pond formed by hydrangea flowers floated on the water. Having visited this event over many years, I always look forward to seeing it, as the mix of colors vary each time. What special view will 2026 bring?
* The display usually appears toward the end of the festival, so please check official sources if you plan on seeing this.

The Hill of Annabelle
Another spectacle is the vast expanse of white, puffy hydrangeas. The view is not only impactful for number of flowers, but they look beautiful against the dark cedar forest and rolling mountains.

Seasonal Highlights Before the Hydrangeas

Although the garden is famed for hydrangea, other floral festivals can be enjoyed.
In early May, the Shakunage (rhododendron) Festival is held, while in early June, the Kalmia Festival brings the rare American rhododendron (Kalmia) to life. The garden’s collection includes 250 large Kalmia plants.

Finally, some Tips for Visiting

Each festival may have slightly differing schedules and prices, so plan your visit accordingly.

Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as the trails have a mix of terrains and can get muddy after rain. June and July can get very hot and humid, so keep that in mind (bring water, a hat, cooling sheets etc.).
